Plant-Based Cakes in Nanaimo: Why Ours Taste Just as Good

If you've spent time eating plant-based desserts, you already know the feeling. The cake that's been "veganised" by swapping butter for margarine and eggs for applesauce — and tastes exactly like that. The dense brick of a brownie. The grey sponge. At Oh Happy Bake in Nanaimo, plant-based isn't an afterthought. It's a recipe we've spent over a decade refining until — genuinely — you can't tell which version is which.

Why most vegan baking disappoints

Most bakeries treat plant-based as a swap. Take a regular recipe, replace the dairy and eggs with the closest available substitute, hope for the best. The result is the cake everyone has tasted at least once: dry, dense, faintly off-tasting, and the reason a lot of people still believe vegan dessert is a compromise.

Plant-based baking is its own discipline. Different ingredients behave differently. The whole recipe needs rethinking — proportions, leavening, fat ratios, how the batter develops in the oven. Brigitte spent years figuring this out before our plant-based cakes went on the menu, and that work shows in every slice. Read more about how we got here.

Our bestsellers — five available plant-based, one designed vegan-first

Five of our six bestsellers are available in plant-based — not as a compromised substitute, but as properly engineered recipes that hold their own next to the original.

Our Birthday Cake — moist, fluffy vanilla sponge with a light, delicate crumb — works just as well in plant-based as it does in regular. Side by side, you'd struggle to pick the vegan one out of a lineup. The Chocolate Birthday Cake brings rich, velvety chocolate cream — and the plant-based version delivers the same indulgence without the dairy.

Our Carrot Cake is warmly spiced and finished with a dreamy cream-style frosting. The plant-based version has converted plenty of sceptics. The Raspberry Vanilla Dream — light vanilla cake layered with fresh raspberry cream — is stunning in either format, and a particularly good choice when you need an elegant cake that has to suit a mixed group.

And our Death by Chocolate was designed vegan-first. Deeply, richly, unapologetically chocolatey, with your choice of fillings from cookies and cream to cherry pie — proof that plant-based can absolutely dominate.

One exception

Our Black Forest Cake is available in regular or gluten-free, but not plant-based. The classic German recipe is built around real whipped cream — and we'd rather keep the cake true to itself than ship a version that compromises on what makes it the Black Forest.

Plant-based and gluten-free? Yes.

Most of our cakes are available in regular, gluten-free, plant-based, and gluten-free & plant-based. No one at the table has to skip the cake — and the quality doesn't change between versions.
